WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING?
Mental health first aid (MHFA) training is a programme that helps to educate people how to identify and assist someone who is suffering from a mental health or drug use condition.

The programme is intended to assist people in recognising early warning signs of mental health conditions, providing initial assistance and support to someone in difficulty, and helping to connect them to external professional support.

1 in 4 of us will experience mental health difficulties each year and with this, it is important that we all take time to look after ourselves and our mental health.

Mental health does not discriminate. Whatever your colour, gender, job title, religious persuasion, income or postcode, we all have mental health and it is just like our fingerprint - completely unique to us.

WHY SHOULD A PRO CLUB HAVE A MHFA IN THEIR TEAM?
We believe that at least one person in each pro team should be Level 1 trained, this would ideally be the Captain.

One of the main responsibilities of a Captain towards their players is to be a leader and role model on and off the pitch. This includes setting a good example in terms of their behaviour, work ethic, and commitment to the team.

The Captain should also be someone that the other players can look up to and rely on for support and guidance. We feel that the Captain should be able to spot the signs of potential mental health conditions and be able to outline simple advice that can be provided to a teammate suffering from a suspected mental health condition.

Teammates should feel comfortable enough to approach their skipper and talk. This, we believe will then cascade down into the Academy teams. On speaking with numerous pro Clubs, we understand that many, many Academy players are struggling with their mental health and some feel unable to discuss this with their Club for fear of being let go. We know that being let go for a mental health condition would not happen, but unfortunately, a lot of Academy players do not.

Alongside the Captain, we would suggest other members of the first team and coaching staff down into the Academy. Young players seeing pros leading this initiative will only help to open up communication and confidence that they too can discuss their own mental health and will allow more people throughout the playing staff to spot potential signs of mental health conditions. Well worth 3 hours of anyone's time.

Ultimately, investing in mental health first aid training for your players and staff is a proactive way to promote mental well-being within your club and will help to create a positive and supportive culture, which can lead to better on-field results and a stronger perception in the media and community.

This training can also be offered to those in the community who you support through your Foundation.

WHY SHOULD A GRASSROOTS CLUB HAVE A MHFA IN THEIR CLUB?
We are also going to press for every grassroots club to also have at least one Mental Health First Aid trained individual (e.g. Committee Member/Coach/Player/Volunteer).

Costs of living crises won't affect pro footballers as much as the rest. 2023 is set to hit hard and many, many people within your grassroots club, from players to coaches, volunteers to committee members and those connected to your club watching on the touchline will feel the pinch, leading to more pressure on their mental health.

Clubs having this resource will allow people attached to the Club to know that there is at least one individual whom they can approach to discuss any aspect of mental health and just like at pro Clubs, this will allow more people to spot potential signs of mental health conditions.

Furthermore, mental health first aid training can help to promote the importance of mental health and reduce the stigma around seeking help for mental health conditions.

This can encourage people to speak up and seek help if they or anyone they know, are experiencing mental health challenges. This can lead to better overall mental health and well-being within the club, helping to create a more supportive and inclusive culture.

If you're a County FA or grassroots club, we can offer you a £5 per delegate rebate on all bookings of over 10 delegates.
